AoA April 4 Match Results

This month we are back up in Camp Verde, AZ for our monthly FT match. After listening to the weather report on Friday, we learned that I-40 has been shut down due to high winds. The wind in Phoenix has the trees bent over at severe angles and I cannot see out to the steel shop, where I work, because of the dust blowing through. Are we going to have to cancel the match because of this? I don't know, but remain optimistic.

Saturday dawns, and I know several others from the valley and from Tucson are not going to be able to make the match for one reason or another, so I make the 1:45 hour drive to Camp Verde solo. It is cool, but not cold and the sky is cloudy, but with sunshine, and I watch the vegetation on the side of the road for excessive motion on the drive up.

Upon arrival, things are looking pretty good. The air is chilly, somewhere in the low 50s, so I put on my sweatshirt. A grand total of 7 intrepid air gunners are in attendance and already on the sight in range as I arrive. The sky is clear with fast moving cumulus clouds, and the wind is blustery, but intermittent. The temperature is cool, but the air smelled good. This is gonna work out pretty good after all.

Bobby Corcorran said that it rained pretty good the day before, and Scott Rogers reported that Flagstaff had horizontal snow falling on Friday prior to his trip south. So far, so good. Sight in was uneventful, with the exception of a large, healthy javelina boar crossing the sight in range, so we had our shooters safety meeting, with range assignments made, and got started shooting at 10:00am

Bobby had 12 lanes, with 2 targets per lane set up for us. His property is just about perfect for FT in that there is almost every different shooting scenario that you can imagine. He has both uphill and downhill shots, open areas and those choked with underbrush, and both level and uneven ground to shoot from. A perfect hunting scenario.



We had an unusual standing lane set up between the forks of a tree, with thick undergrowth preventing anything but a standing shot, and distances of 30 and 37 yards. Uneven ground and blustery wind made it difficult to hold steady on the owl and snake targets, yet match winner Scott Rogers nailed all 4 shots somehow. I missed all 4 as did a few others.

We had a benchrest lane with the targets waaaaaay out there considering the size of the KZ. The 40 yard target with ½ KZ and the 48 yard target with the ¾ KZ were tough to shoot in the wind. I got 2 knockdowns for high score on that lane, while Bob and Scott each got only one hit and everyone else blanking it. Did I mention that Bobby set up a challenging course? We did have fun!


We had a new shooter this month, too. Mary Ann, Scott Rogers wife, decided to come play airgun games with us and did rather well for her first outing. I was paired with her and she proceeded to embarrass me on the standing lane by nailing 2 of the 4 shots. Hubby Scott taught her well, and she is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future. She shot Bobby's Steyr LG-100 quite handily, and is in need of her own rifle. (Hey, Scott: hint, hint!)

Sandy fixed us a wonderful lunch of BBQ chicken that tasted soooo good! Her butter squares cakes /cookies / whatever she calls them, were as good as her cream cheese squares from last month! If my wife ever gets her hands on that recipe, I will end up weighing 400 lbs! OH, they are so good! Thanks again to Sandy for going over and above to fill our tummies. We are becoming spoiled! You guys who didn't make the match have no idea of what you missed.

Our Daystate Huntsman Classic rifle raffle is progressing nicely with a bit over 100 tickets sold so far. At this rate, we should have all the tickets sold and the drawing by the next monthly match.
