Mt. Cheaha Challenge

AAFTA has a new club that is in Heflin, Alabama. On September 12, 2009 the fine folks of Heflin hosted The Mt. Cheaha Challenge, a one-day 84 shot match to challenge the shooting skills of all who attended. An overcast day with a slight breeze kept things comfortable for the shooters.

Paul Oswalt was our course designer and, although, Paul does not have a lot of practical experience in setting up FT courses you certainly could not tell it in the courses we shot. Paul did a beautiful job of laying out visually appealing and fun-to-shoot courses. The lay of the land is rolling hills in a lightly wooded forest, which lends itself to picturesque lanes with interesting target placement and Paul took full advantage of his surroundings.

After the morning match of 42 shots we were treated to a wonderful BBQ lunch with some good southern sweet tea served by Heflin Parks and Recreation director Tammy Perry. Then it was back to the woods for the afternoon match of 42 shots, followed by the awards ceremony. Several folks brought goodies to sell and more than a few items found new homes after the match. Congratulations to Harold Rushton (PCP), Doug Vinson (Piston), and Charles Garvey (Hunter) on winning their respective classes, good shooting guys.

Everyone had a great time and is looking forward to another invite to do some shooting in Heflin in the near future. Thank you to all of the folks in Heflin for a perfect day of FT shooting.
