2011 AAFTA Nationals Match Report

Ain’t We Got Fun?!!

  A major contributing element that relates to a successful match is weather conditions.  It is completely out of our control: ‘near perfect’ was the comment heard most often.  Temperatures during all three days (Oct. 14-16) were very comfortable.  And there was just enough variable wind present to sort out the overall skills of our competitors.

  Both courses, red and white, were set-up by Cliff Smith and Roz Sumpter.  It took approximately two weeks of on and off tweaking before both were deemed competition ready.  Afterwards, only a few minor adjustments had to be made.  This in compliance with suggestions from attending AAFTA Governors during their inspection.

  Regarding the ‘Troyer’ difficulty factor for kill zone size and target placement, both rifle courses averaged nearly identical: a 35.5? without a wind component.  I believe that rating is considered as mid-difficult.

  As with every match, some sort of glitches have to arise.  They occurred primarily at start of competition on Saturday.  Resident critters saw fit to compromise a few of our target reset cords, causing cold lines for a re-tie.  A proven reliable target immediately decided not to be, prompting hasty replacement.  Then a veteran novelty target gave up the ghost after a liberal dose of lead poisoning.  Yet again, another target went fickle at some point, not being able to decide if it wanted to go down with a paddle hit or not.

  The above sounds more disruptive than it actually was.  It has been added for the purpose of ‘truth in presentation’.  Nothing goes forward exactly as we intend, regardless of best efforts.  All told, I’d say that 95% of the match went very well indeed.

  After conducting a major match, I listen intently to comments written or spoken.  This points me to things that need tending to in future.  I am especially tuned to comments regarding course difficulty.  People will inevitably whine about how hard it was to post a good score.  I heard nothing of the sort.  So I believe we got it right.

  What was very gratifying was in hearing the number of attendees commenting on what a good time they had.  To me, this is the best indicator as to whether they will return or not !

  The meals were bountiful and very tasty.  Lots of smiles and laughter resounded throughout.  Courtesy and consideration were present.  Safety proved not an issue.  Positive memories embedded for the future.

  Finally,  the biggest  ‘thank you’ goes out to all of the competitors, along with their family members and friends, who joined us.  Without all of you and the assistance provided, we could not continue our efforts to grow this sport.
